EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Andrea Bernieri for Giulio Ferrrario's "Costumes Antique and Modern of All Peoples" published in Florence in 1843, showcases three prominent Egyptian deities: Anubis, Aries, and Serapis. Anubis, depicted in the first and second images, is the jackal-headed god associated with mummification and the afterlife. His presence was crucial in the embalming process, and he was believed to guide the deceased through the underworld. In Egyptian mythology, Anubis was also considered the god of the dead, wilderness, and the desert. In the third and fourth images, we encounter Aries, the ram-headed god. Aries was the god of war, virility, and the desert. He was often depicted as a man with the horns of a ram, symbolizing strength and power. Aries was also believed to be the god of the annual flooding of the Nile River, ensuring the fertility of the land. The final image showcases Serapis, the god of the dead, grain, and the earth. Serapis was a syncretic deity, combining elements of Greek and Egyptian mythology. He was often depicted as a bearded man wearing the horns of a bull and the Egyptian pharaoh's crown. Serapis was the god of the dead, but he was also considered the god of the living, as he was believed to ensure the fertility of the land and the prosperity of the people. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the unique and intriguing aspects of Egyptian mythology but also highlights the rich cultural heritage and anthropological significance of ancient civilizations. The handcoloured copperplate engraving technique adds a level of detail and vibrancy to the images, making them a captivating representation of the gods and their roles in ancient Egyptian society.
