EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Lynx constellation, as depicted in a 19th-century map of stars and constellations. Created by Kornelius Reissig, an esteemed Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg, this celestial atlas titled "Presentation of constellations in 30 tables" was the earliest star atlas to emerge from Russia. The image reveals Plate 6 of this historical masterpiece, which beautifully illustrates the Lynx constellation against a striking black background. The artwork features intricate details and precise representations of mythological figures and animals associated with each constellation. With its gold leaf accents and Cyrillic labels denoting the constellations, this piece exemplifies both artistic beauty and scientific accuracy. Punched holes on the map indicate specific coordinates within the night sky, allowing astronomers to navigate through these stellar wonders. As part of celestial cartography or uranography, this publication holds great significance in astronomical history. It draws inspiration from earlier works by Bode (1806) and Flamsteed (1776), further enriching our understanding of these cosmic formations. Preserved meticulously by LIBRARY OF CONGRESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this print offers a glimpse into a time when exploration of the heavens ignited curiosity among scholars worldwide. Its presence serves as a reminder that even centuries ago, humanity's fascination with stars transcended borders and languages
