Neanderthal excavation, Pinilla del Valle C015 / 6589
Neanderthal excavation. Researchers carrying out excavations for prehistoric human fossils at the Pinilla del Valle site, in the Lozoya Valley, near Madrid, Spain. Several Neanderthal fossils have been found here. Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis) inhabited Europe and western Asia between 230, 000 and 29, 000 years ago. They did not use complex tools but had mastery of fire and built shelters. It is thought that they had language and a complex social structure, living in small family groups and hunting for food. Excavations by around 70 people have been taking place here every summer for over a decade since around 2002

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the ongoing excavation of Neanderthal fossils at the Pinilla del Valle site, located in the picturesque Lozoya Valley near Madrid, Spain. The dedicated researchers depicted here are diligently unearthing prehistoric human remains that shed light on our evolutionary history. Neanderthals, known scientifically as Homo neanderthalensis, once inhabited Europe and western Asia between 230,000 and 29,000 years ago. Despite their lack of complex tools, they possessed remarkable skills such as fire mastery and shelter construction. It is believed that these ancient humans had language abilities and lived in tight-knit family groups while hunting for sustenance. For over a decade since around 2002, approximately 70 individuals have been tirelessly excavating this significant archaeological site every summer. Their efforts have yielded numerous Neanderthal fossils which provide invaluable insights into our ancestors' lives. The diverse team seen in the photograph includes both male and female scientists from various backgrounds working together to uncover humanity's past. These anthropologists, paleontologists, surveyors, and researchers epitomize collaboration in unraveling the mysteries of human evolution.
