Trench warfare is a type of combat in which opposing forces fight from trenches dug into the ground. It was used extensively during World War I, when both sides dug in and fought from trenches for months at a time. Trenches provided protection from enemy fire, allowing soldiers to survive longer and fight more effectively. However, they also brought with them new dangers such as disease, lice infestations, and poison gas attacks. Trench warfare was characterized by long periods of stalemate and high casualties on both sides due to the difficulty of breaking through enemy lines. In some cases, it lasted for years before either side could gain an advantage over the other. Despite its horrors, trench warfare remains an important part of military history that continues to shape modern tactics today.
