Golden Spike National Historic Site. Recreation of the 1869 meeting of train engines at the Golden Spike National Historic Site (NHS), Utah, USA. Known as Promontory Summit, this is where the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads joined on 10 May 1869. The Golden Spike Ceremony was held to mark the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in the USA. Several hundred people attended the event, including railroad workers and engineers. The two locomotives were Central Pacific No. 60 (left, the Jupiter) and Union Pacific No. 119 (right). This area was designated an NHS in 1957. For contemporary photographs, see C011/0526 and 0527
