EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a satirical artwork depicting the Influenza epidemic of 1803. The image showcases a group of British physicians bowing in deference to a figure symbolizing the disease itself. Created by amateur artist Temple West and published in London, this piece is rich with historical significance. The doctors are portrayed engaging in conversation, presenting an address of thanks to the personification of influenza. Various medical sayings associated with these caricaturized physicians can be seen throughout the artwork, while remedies are displayed on and under a nearby table. This particular copy comes from the German book "Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin" by Eugen Hollander, an esteemed art historian and physician. It offers us a glimpse into the artistic representation of medicine during that era. The illustration not only reflects the fatal nature of influenza but also highlights its impact on society at large. With elements such as laudanum bottles and emetic substances present, it underscores both medical practices and public perception surrounding epidemics. Through this satirical lens, we witness how artists like Temple West used their craft to comment on significant events like pandemics even centuries ago. This thought-provoking image serves as a reminder of our shared history with infectious diseases and how they have shaped our understanding of medicine today.
