EDITORS COMMENTS

Indira Gandhi (1917-1984), one of the most influential political figures in Indian history, lies in state at her tomb located in the heart of Delhi, India. This poignant photograph captures the solemnity and reverence of the scene as thousands of mourners pay their respects to the late Prime Minister. Indira Gandhi, born in 1917, served as the Prime Minister of India for a total of 15 years, making her the longest-serving prime minister in Indian history. Her tenure was marked by significant achievements, including the Green Revolution which transformed Indian agriculture, as well as controversial decisions such as the declaration of a state of emergency in 1975. The photograph was taken in 1984, a year marked by tragedy and turmoil in India. In June of that year, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in retaliation for the military operation in the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar. The aftermath of her death saw widespread violence and unrest, particularly against the Sikh community. The tomb, located in the Shanti Van complex in New Delhi, was built in 1985 and serves as a memorial to Indira Gandhi and her legacy. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex and tumultuous history of modern India and the enduring impact of its leaders. The image captures the somber mood of the scene, with the simple yet elegant architecture of the tomb serving as a backdrop to the crowd of mourners. The photograph is a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of Indira Gandhi and her role in shaping the course of Indian history.
