EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a unique advertising piece from the late 1920s, featuring a Players counter card in the shape of a full-length profile of a naval officer. The distinguished commander is depicted with his left hand casually tucked into his pocket, while his right hand holds a Navy Cut cigarette to his mouth. The attention to detail is evident in the officer's insignia, indicating his high rank within the navy. At the base of the card, bold text proudly displays "PLAYERs // NAVY CUT" emphasizing the brand being promoted. On its reverse side, we find an intriguing handwritten note requesting its return to Sherwood Rise Archives - perhaps this card was once part of their collection or exhibition. Additionally, there is an accompanying label that reads "MARDONS // WINDOW NOVELTIES // EMBOSSED SHOWCARDS / &C, &C // VARNISHERS // GELATINERS & FRAME MAKERS // BRISTOL & LONDON". This suggests that Mardons was responsible for creating and producing such eye-catching promotional materials during that era. The image evokes nostalgia for Nottingham's rich history as it combines elements of advertising, military symbolism, and maritime imagery. It serves as a reminder of John Player and Sons' role in tobacco production at that time but should not be associated with any commercial use today.
