A carnival atmosphere came to Huddersfield on Saturday, with music and entertainment Caribbean style. A procession through Birkby and the town centre began an afternoon and evening of Caribbean music and dance which continued in Greenhead Park. Organised by Huddersfield Carnival Committee, the event got under way as a procession of floats and steel bands left the Hudawi Centre. The procession included floats from organisations including the Jamaica Nationals, Deighton High School Steel Band, Springwood Community Association, Liverpool Carnival Committee, National Children Centre, Kirklees Sports Association for the Disabled, Huddersfield Caribbean Association, Trinidad and Tobago Ladies, North Star Steel Band and Birmingham Maestro Steel Band. The competition for the best steel band, which is based at Birkby Junior School, and the Trinidad and Tobago Ladies were judged the best masquerading band. Entertainment continued at Greenhead Park with music from the steel bands and from London Band Somo Somo. The day ended with a carnival dance at the Hudawi Centre. 11th July 1987. A vibrant and lively carnival atmosphere descended upon Huddersfield on a sunny Saturday, filling the streets with the infectious rhythms of Caribbean music and dance. The town came alive as a colorful procession made its way through Birkby and the town center, led by floats adorned with eye-catching decorations from various organizations.
