These Salendine Nook High School pupils have made a clean sweep

These Salendine Nook High School pupils have made a clean sweep. Pupils have armed themselves with shovels and brushes to tackle litter and rubbish in the subway beneath the busy New Hey Road near their school. It was one of the first projects fo the schools¿Community Help Panel. Other projects the panel aims to tackle including cutting down smoking by pupils, improving lock rooms and opening a stationery store. Mrs Lyn Brooks, head of the foruth year, said it was hoped the panel would help both the school and the community. Huddersfield crime Prevention officer Pc Phil Devereux, who is backing the panel, said similar schemes were in operation at three other Huddersfield high schools ? Rawthorpe, Almondbury and All Saints¿Bradley. It was hoped all would mount big projects during National Crime Prevention Week in April, when the police plan to hold a panel quiz. 6th February 1991

Gentle giant Geoff Capes, the strongest man in the world

Gentle giant Geoff Capes, the strongest man in the world, came to Huddersfield today to give a big lift to handicapped children at Holly Bank School. Britain's own man mountain took time off from his role as Genie of the Lamp in Aladdin at Halifax's Civic Theatre to hand over the keys of a special, purpose-built coach on behalf of ICI's Huddersfield works. The company has donated the £22,000 17-seater vehicle, which the school will use for trips all over this country and abroad. Its special features include a hydraulic tail lift, heaters and wheelchair storage space. Mr Trevor Hodkinson, headmaster at Holly Bank, said: "It is a tremendous gift. The coach is spacious and luxuriously fitted and will allow us to take out large numbers of children in comfort. This is the first stage of a link between the school and ICI, which will be of great benefit to our community." 23rd January 1986
