In the early 20th century, the fear of the bubonic plague loomed large over the people of Freston, Suffolk, in the United Kingdom. Four cases of pneumonic plague had been reported, and the cause was suspected to be plague-carrying rats and hares. The Illustrated London News reported on the drastic measures taken to prevent the further spread of the disease. The culling of rats and hares became an urgent priority. Many methods were employed to exterminate the vermin, including shooting, ferreting, and poisoning. In the illustration, a man is shown using a long pole to place poisoned food well within rat holes.
