Paramyxovirus particles, TEM

Sendai virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Sendai virus particles (virions, orange). The protein coat (capsid) of one of the particles has split, allowing its RNA (ribonucleic acid) genetic material (orange strips) to spill out. The Sendai virus is a paramyxovirus. Also known as parainfluenza virus type 1, it infects mice, rats, hamsters and guinea pigs. It is transmitted by direct contact and in the air, causing laboured breathing and a decrease in the number of offspring produced. The Sendai virus is also used as a cell-fusing agent in laboratories. Magnification unknown

Seeking to arrest the dread disease: ridding the infected district of creatures likely to carry plague-microbes. Illustrative diagram in The Illustrated London News showing how a major cull of rats, hares and rabbits took place in Suffolk in 1910, after it was discovered that plague-carrying rats may have been the cause of deaths from pneumonia among four people in Freston, Suffolk. Dead of dying rats and hares were found to be carrying the plague microbes. The cull was done by many methods including shooting and ferreting. One of the sketches shows a man using a long pole to place poisoned food well within rats holes. Date: 1910

Abdullah cigarettes advertisement, WW1 - trench rats

One of a series of advertisements for Abdullah cigarettes during the First World War illustrated by Lewis Baumer. This one employs the familiar image of a British Tommy dismayed to find that the trench rat sharing his dug-out has gnawed at his Abdullahs! An accompanying poem tells the sorry tale. Date: 1918
