EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the Boeing KC-135A Stratotanker 57-2589 during a circa 1980 period, following its conversion from a strategic reconnaissance aircraft to a personal transport for the Commander-in-Chief (CINC) of Pacific Air Forces. The plane, originally designated as MSN 17725 and nicknamed "Casey-01," first took to the skies on December 13, 1958, and was delivered to the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, on January 21, 1959. After serving in this role for several years, the KC-135A was returned to the United States Air Force (USAF) for conversion to a KC-135E model in June 1992. The aircraft underwent extensive modifications to support aerial refueling missions. Its next known assignment was with the 65th Airlift Squadron at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, in July 2002. Prior to its retirement, the 57-2589 had previously performed a role as a C-135C transport aircraft, with the call sign 61 2669, during the summer of 2008. The plane was eventually retired and now serves as a static ground trainer at the 344th Training Squadron at Kelly Field, Texas. This iconic aircraft, with its distinctive speckled trout paint scheme, played a significant role in the history of aviation and the US military. Its versatility and adaptability were showcased throughout its service life, making it an essential asset to the USAF.
