The War in Denmark: Danish cruisers of Rügen chasing a Prussian flotilla into Swinemünde... 1864. Creator: Unknown
The War in Denmark: Danish cruisers of Rugen chasing a Prussian flotilla into Swinemunde - from a sketch by our Danish correspondent, 1864. View of...the Prussian vessels, Arcona, Loreley, Nymph, running away as fast as they can, on the left hand, while the Prussian gun-boats lie as close as possible to the shore. The foremost of the Danish ships is the Sjoelland [or Sjaelland], the second is the Skjold, and the Thor comes last, all steaming their best in pursuit of the retreating foe, despite a shower of shot and shell from the Prussian gun-boats flying through the air and falling harmlessly into the sea. The land beyond is the Isle of Rugen, on the Baltic coast, just opposite Copenhagen...The Loreley and one of the corvettes were badly raked; and their loss of killed and wounded, which they say, were one officer, a pilot, and thirteen men, must have been considerable. It is well known that Prussia (like Russia) does not allow her real losses to transpire. The Danish Admiral's ship had three seamen dead and nineteen wounded; the other ship none. The greatest animation prevails in the Danish fleet'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
**The War in Denmark: A Fierce Pursuit on the Baltic**
In this dramatic print, a Prussian flotilla is chased into Swinemünde by Danish cruisers of Rügen. The scene captures the intensity of battle as the Prussian vessels - Arcona, Loreley, and Nymph - flee for their lives while Danish ships Sjoelland (or Sjaelland), Skjold, and Thor give chase. Despite being pelted with shot and shell from the Prussian gun-boats, the Danish fleet remains undeterred in its pursuit of the retreating foe.
The print reveals a chaotic scene as shells whizz through the air and fall harmlessly into the Baltic Sea. In this 1864 battle, one Prussian ship - Loreley - was badly damaged, suffering significant losses among its crew. The Danish Admiral's ship suffered three fatalities and nineteen wounded sailors, while another Danish vessel remained unscathed.
This powerful image from "Illustrated London News" (1864) captures the heat of war on the Baltic coast, just opposite Copenhagen. It is a testament to the bravery and determination of both sides in this conflict that raged during Denmark's struggle for independence.
