Phases of the Moon
Phases of the Moon. Composite image showing the Moon at each stage of its 28 day cycle (a lunar month). Along the top row, the Moon is a waxing (growing in apparent size) crescent, reaching a half Moon after 7 days. For the next seven days it is a waxing gibbous (between half and full), reaching a full Moon (far right of second row) after 14 days. The Moon is then a waning (decreasing in apparent size) gibbous, reaching another half moon 21 days into the cycle. On the bottom row it is a waning crescent, reaching the new Moon stage at bottom right. The phases of the Moon are due to it revealing differing amounts of its sunlit face as it orbits the Earth. Photographed from Santorini on 3rd - 30th June 2000

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Phases of the Moon" takes us on a mesmerizing journey through the lunar cycle. In this composite image, we witness the Moon at each stage of its 28-day dance around our planet Earth. The top row showcases the waxing crescent phase, where the Moon gradually grows in apparent size over seven days until it reaches a magnificent half-moon. Moving into the second row, we observe the transition to a waxing gibbous phase as it continues to expand towards its full glory after 14 days. As time progresses, we enter into the waning gibbous phase, witnessing a gradual decrease in apparent size until another half moon emerges at day 21. Finally, in awe-inspiring fashion, we descend into the bottom row where an enchanting waning crescent leads us to embrace the new moon stage at bottom right. These breathtaking transformations occur due to varying amounts of sunlight illuminating different portions of our celestial companion as it orbits around us. Captured from Santorini between June 3rd and June 30th in 2000 by Science Photo Library, this print not only serves as an exquisite piece of art but also offers insights into astronomy and cosmology. It reminds us of nature's rhythmic harmony and invites contemplation about our place within this vast universe.
