Hapsburg jaw
Hapsburg jaw. Historical artwork (after Velasquez) of King Philip IV of Spain (1605-1665). Like several of his predecessors and descendants, Philip IV had a protruding lower jaw. The condition, called mandibular prognathism syndrome or Hapsburg jaw, was the result of inbreeding among the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The trait was first noticed in Maximilian I (1459-1519). Philip IVs son, Charles II, had such a serious case of Hapsburg jaw that he was unable to chew. He was also mentally retarded and impotent

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork print showcases King Philip IV of Spain, a prominent figure in the 17th century. However, what makes this portrait particularly intriguing is the depiction of his unique physical trait known as the Hapsburg jaw. This condition, also referred to as mandibular prognathism syndrome, was prevalent among several members of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy due to generations of inbreeding. The protruding lower jaw seen in King Philip IV and his descendants was first observed in Maximilian I during the late 15th century. However, it reached its most severe form with Philip IV's son, Charles II. His case was so extreme that he faced difficulties chewing and suffered from mental retardation and impotence. This illustration not only provides us with a glimpse into Spanish history but also sheds light on the consequences of genetic mutations caused by extensive inbreeding within royal families. The painting serves as a reminder of how genetics can shape our physical characteristics and influence our health. As we reflect upon this image, let us appreciate both its artistic value and its significance in understanding medical conditions influenced by inheritance patterns throughout history.
