EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Trionfi sugar sculptures of Myrrha and Daphne, created for a grand banquet hosted by British Ambassador Roger Palmer, Earl of Castlemaine, in Rome on January 14,1687. The intricate etching captures the essence of this extraordinary event that celebrated artistry and opulence. On the left side of the image, we witness the transformation of Myrrha into a myrtle tree. With delicate details, her figure splits open to reveal the infant Adonis emerging from within. This symbolic representation highlights themes of rebirth and nature's eternal cycle. On the right side, we are enchanted by Daphne's metamorphosis into a laurel tree at the hands of her father Peneus. As Apollo approaches with admiration in his eyes, Cupid gracefully flies nearby. This scene beautifully portrays love's transformative power and immortalizes an ancient mythological tale. The collaboration between talented artists Giovanni Battista Lenardi as designer and Arnold van Westerhout as engraver has resulted in an exquisite piece that exudes elegance and sophistication.
