EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the essence of a bygone era with its depiction of Navy Cut Tobacco from 1939-40. The rectangular pull-forward counter card is divided into two sections, each telling a unique story. The rear section showcases an estuary scene adorned with three elegant sailing yachts and three majestic ships in the background, creating a picturesque maritime setting. The front section, which can be pulled forward, reveals a cut-out of a sailor peering over a wall at the yachts. This clever design adds depth and intrigue to the overall composition. In the bottom left-hand corner, we find the iconic trademark of a sailor in a life-buoy – synonymous with quality and authenticity. Sep. E Scott's signature proudly adorns this artwork, showcasing his artistic prowess and attention to detail. The text on the card boldly declares "PLAYERs // NAVY CUT // TOBACCO" leaving no doubt as to its purpose. Not only does this image evoke nostalgia for Nottingham City Photos enthusiasts but it also highlights elements such as uniformed sailors, sailing vessels, military references, and naval aesthetics that are deeply intertwined within our history and culture. This print serves as both advertising for John Player & Sons' Navy Cut Tobacco while also providing an insight into packaging design during that time period.
