Selfridges, London - Section of Fancy Jewellery

Selfridges & Co, Oxford Street, London - Section of Fancy Jewellery. Founded by American-born retail magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge (1858 - 1947), the Flagship store in Oxford Street was opened in 1909. Selfridge was an innovator in the fields of marketing and advertising, creating a complete shopping environment of enjoyment as opposed to mere functionality. The perfume section was placed front centre (still in evidence in every department store today), merchandise was placed on open display and the store was backed with direct and widely-visible advertising campaigns. This set of cards is a fine example! The London store was designed by Daniel Burnham

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Fancy Jewellery section of Selfridges & Co., located on London's iconic Oxford Street. Founded in 1909 by American-born retail pioneer Harry Gordon Selfridge, Selfridges was a trailblazer in the realms of marketing and advertising, revolutionizing the shopping experience by transforming it into an enjoyable endeavor rather than a mere functional chore. Selfridge's innovative approach is evident in this image, with the perfume section taking center stage, just as it does in department stores today. The open display of merchandise, a concept that Selfridge popularized, is also clearly visible in this photograph. The London store, designed by renowned architect Daniel Burnham, was a testament to Selfridge's vision of creating a shopping environment that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also engaging and inviting. Selfridge's groundbreaking marketing strategies, such as direct and widely-visible advertising campaigns, are exemplified in this set of cards. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to witness the charm and allure of shopping at Selfridges over a century ago. This photograph is not only a fascinating glimpse into the history of retail but also a reminder of the enduring appeal of fine jewellery and the magical experience of discovering it in a beautiful store setting.
