EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the Duke of York, Albert (1895-1952), is seen accompanying Ras Tafari (1892-1975), the Prince Regent of Ethiopia, during his visit to England in July 1924. The Prince Regent, who would later reign as Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, is dressed in traditional African attire, including a white cape, cloak, hat, and robes, as he walks with the Duke at Victoria Station in London. The historic visit marked a significant moment in international diplomacy, as Ras Tafari met with King George V and the Prime Minister before his return to Abyssinia (now Ethiopia). At the time, the Italian fascist regime under Benito Mussolini was expanding its colonial empire in East Africa, and the visit served to strengthen the diplomatic ties between Ethiopia and the United Kingdom. The Rastafari religion and social movement, which emerged in the late 1930s, derives from the pre-regnal title of Haile Selassie I. The Rastafari belief system holds the Emperor as a divine figure and a symbol of African pride and resistance. The photograph captures a moment of historical significance, as the future Emperor stands proudly in London, a few years before the Italians would drive him into exile in 1936. The image is a testament to the rich cultural exchange that took place during the 1920s, as well as the complex political dynamics of the time. The Duke of York, as the sixth in line to the British throne, played an important role in the diplomatic mission, extending a warm welcome to the visiting African leader. The scene at Victoria Station is a powerful reminder of the historical connections between Africa and Europe, and the enduring legacy of Haile Selassie I as a symbol of African resistance and resilience.
