EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "How Shall We Three Meet Again?" by Joseph Swain, we are transported back to the political landscape of 19th century Britain. The cartoon, originally published in Punch magazine on December 5,1885, depicts three influential figures: Sir Michael Hicks Beach, Lord Salisbury, and William Gladstone. At the time this artwork was created, a General Election had just been called, making it a critical moment for these politicians. Sir Michael Hicks Beach represented the Conservative Party as their Home Secretary and Leader of the Party in the Commons. Lord Salisbury served as the Conservative Prime Minister and Leader in the Lords. On the other hand, William Gladstone was a former Liberal Prime Minister. The image draws inspiration from Shakespeare's Macbeth with its reference to witches and witchcraft. It cleverly satirizes these statesmen as they gather together like a coven plotting their next moves in politics. Joseph Swain's skillful engraving brings out every detail of this caricatured portrayal of these prominent leaders. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to their expressions and gestures while emphasizing their importance within British politics during that era. This print serves not only as an artistic representation but also as a historical document capturing an important moment in time when power dynamics were shifting between conservative and liberal parties. It is through such artworks that we can gain insight into past events while appreciating the artistry behind them.
