Captain Bairnsfathers first meeting with Old Bill, WW1

This historic incident took place during the first battle of Ypres, but the Censor held stern views about battle pictures in those days, so that it is only now that we are happily able to place it upon record in print. Cartoon by Bernard Hugh recording the (fictional) first meeting of fellow cartoonist, Captain Bruce Bairnsfather, with the character who would make his name - "Old Bill'. Hugh pays a homage to Bairnsfather's most famous cartoon - The Better Ole. Date: 1919

Laying Down the Law

Landseer helped popularise anthropomorphism in art and this is a copy of one of his best-known examples. Sometimes called Trial by Jury, the Poodle was owned by Count D'Orsay and has been identified as playing the role of Lord Brougham. Landseer's painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1840 and aquired by the 6th Duke of Devonshire, who had his own Blenheim Spaniel, Bony, inserted behind the Greyhound, as can be seen in this later copy
