Yakov Zeldovich, Soviet physicist

Yakov Borisovich Zeldovich (1914-1987), Soviet physicist. Zeldovich joined the Soviet Atomic Project in 1943, working on nuclear weapons until 1963. From the 1950s onwards, he also worked on elementary particles, making several important predictions about meson and muon decay, as well as the behaviour of cold neutrons. From the 1960s, he worked in astrophysics and cosmology, working on the large-scale structure of the universe, black holes, and predicting the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect concerning the cosmic background radiation. He received numerous awards, including three Orders of Lenin (1949, 1962 and 1974) and the Kurchatov Medal (1977). An asteroid has been named in his honour. Photographed in Russia in 1985

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed Soviet physicist, Yakov Zeldovich, in 1985. A prominent figure in the scientific community, Zeldovich's contributions spanned across various fields throughout his illustrious career. Initially involved with the Soviet Atomic Project from 1943 to 1963, he played a crucial role in nuclear weapons research. However, his interests extended far beyond this realm. From the 1950s onwards, Zeldovich delved into elementary particles and made significant predictions regarding meson and muon decay as well as the behavior of cold neutrons. Transitioning to astrophysics and cosmology during the 1960s, he explored topics such as black holes and the large-scale structure of the universe. Notably, he predicted an effect known as Sunyaev-Zeldovich concerning cosmic background radiation. Zeldovich's remarkable achievements did not go unnoticed; he received numerous accolades for his groundbreaking work including three Orders of Lenin and the prestigious Kurchatov Medal. Moreover, an asteroid was named in his honor—a testament to his lasting impact on science. In this monochrome portrait taken in Russia during 1985, we see a wise elderly man who exudes knowledge and experience. His presence is a reminder of how one individual can shape our understanding of complex phenomena that define our world today—physics enthusiasts will undoubtedly cherish this extraordinary image capturing a true luminary in their field.
