Victoria Falls, 19th century

Victoria Falls. 19th century artwork of the Victoria Falls (known locally as the Smoke that Thunders ) on the Zambezi River. Today, the falls are on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border. Spray and mist are seen rising from the base of these falls, which are among the largest in the world. They are 1708 metres wide, and over 1000 cubic metres per second flows over them, falling 108 metres to the lower level. This engraving is from Missionary travels and researches in South Africa (London, 1857), by the Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873), the first European to see the falls, doing so in 1855
