Metal token for Basil Burchell, Sole Proprietor of the Anodyne Necklace for Children Cutting teeth. The anodyne necklace was a popular quack remedy dating from as early as the 1700s. It was believed to ward off illness from teething children at a time when infant mortality rates amongst the poor in London were high due to unhealthy living conditions Tokens such as these were used as an alternative currency and were exchanged for goods. Tokens were made of cheaper, lighter metals and were of lower value than money. They also served as advertisements for the merchants products. This token dates from the nineteenth century
