Animal magnetism, satirical artwork

Animal magnetism. Satirical artwork depicting a patient and animal magnetism practitioner with animal heads. Animal magnetism was developed by the German physician Franz Mesmer (1734-1815) in the 1770s. It involved manipulating a magnetic fluid thought to reside in living objects. The practice was later renamed mesmerism, and eventually led to the development of hypnosis. At lower left is a German copy of Ovid's Metamorphoses'. This 19th century artwork is from Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932)

Merchants token, 19th century

Metal token for Basil Burchell, Sole Proprietor of the Anodyne Necklace for Children Cutting teeth'. The anodyne necklace was a popular quack remedy dating from as early as the 1700s. It was believed to ward off illness from teething children at a time when infant mortality rates amongst the poor in London were high due to unhealthy living conditions Tokens such as these were used as an alternative currency and were exchanged for goods. Tokens were made of cheaper, lighter metals and were of lower value than money. They also served as advertisements for the merchant's products. This token dates from the nineteenth century

Dentistry caricature, 19th century

Dentistry caricature. 19th-century artwork titled Hob and Stage Doctor, showing an itinerant tooth drawer pulling a patient's tooth with a tooth key at a country fair or market. The patient is seated on the floor at left and is being held in a headlock by the tooth drawer, who is a mountebank or quack doctor wearing a tricorne hat and wig. At centre is a clown-like prankster figure (hob) providing entertainment to the crowd. This engraving is by William Davison (1781-1858) of Alnwick, Northumberland, UK. It was published circa 1812 to 1817 in Some Alnwick caricatures'. The original was by Edward Dighton (c.1752-1819)
