Jean Delambre, French astronomer

Jean Delambre (1749-1822), French astronomer. He published astronomical tables in 1792, predicting the orbits of the Sun, Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter and its satellites. Differences from the observed orbit of Uranus led to the discovery of a new planet, Neptune. In the 1790s he measured an arc of the meridian (an imaginary line on the surface of the globe connecting the North and South Poles) between Dunkirk and Barcelona. As well as being essential for map making, this established a basis for the new metric system. Engraving from Les Savants Modernes (1899)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving showcases the esteemed Jean Delambre, a prominent French astronomer from the 18th to 19th century. Known for his groundbreaking work in predicting celestial orbits, Delambre's astronomical tables published in 1792 accurately foretold the paths of celestial bodies such as the Sun, Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter, and its satellites. However, it was his observation of discrepancies in Uranus' orbit that led to one of astronomy's greatest discoveries - Neptune. Delambre's scientific pursuits extended beyond planetary predictions. In the 1790s, he meticulously measured an arc of the meridian between Dunkirk and Barcelona. This arduous task not only contributed to map-making but also laid the foundation for the development of the metric system. The portrait captures Delambre as a distinguished figure with an air of intellect and curiosity. His contribution to science is evident through his focused gaze and thoughtful expression. As a Caucasian man dressed in traditional attire from that era, this image serves as a historical testament to both French history and advancements in scientific exploration during this period. Engraved for "Les Savants Modernes" (1899), this artwork pays homage to Delambre's significant contributions within astronomy and cartography while highlighting his role as a key figure in shaping our understanding of celestial mechanics and measurement systems.
