Higgs boson event, ATLAS detector C013 / 6892

Higgs boson event. Graphic of a transverse section through a detector showing one of the numerous particle collision events recorded during the search for the Higgs boson. This event (a proton-proton collision) was recorded with the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) detector on 10 June 2012. The collision produced two muon pairs (red tracks). This is part of the enormous amount of data collected to enable confirmation of the theories being tested. In the Standard Model, the Higgs boson is used to explain why particles have mass. CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) announced the Higgs boson discovery on 4 July 2012

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a momentous event in the world of particle physics - the Higgs boson event. The graphic depicts a transverse section through a detector, revealing one of the countless particle collision events recorded during the search for this elusive subatomic particle. Captured on 10 June 2012 with the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) detector at CERN, this proton-proton collision resulted in two muon pairs, represented by striking red tracks. The image represents just a fraction of the vast amount of data collected to validate and confirm prevailing theories. In particular, it contributes to our understanding of why particles possess mass as explained by the Standard Model, where the Higgs boson plays a crucial role. CERN, Europe's esteemed particle physics laboratory located in Geneva, announced their groundbreaking discovery of the Higgs boson on 4 July 2012. This monumental achievement marked an extraordinary milestone in scientific research and shed light on fundamental questions about the structure of matter. Displayed with precision and clarity, this illustration serves as both an educational tool and a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. It symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and unveils glimpses into previously uncharted territories within our universe. Authored by ATLAS COLLABORATION/CERN/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this remarkable print encapsulates years of tireless experimentation and collaboration among scientists from around the globe. It stands as an enduring reminder that curiosity knows no bounds when it comes to unraveling nature's deepest secrets.
