EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Cornish tin mines of the 19th century, a testament to Cornwall's rich industrial history. Located in the picturesque parish of St Just in Penwith, these mines were at their peak during this era, with operations dating back to 1721. The intricate network of tunnels extended beneath the sea for nearly a kilometer, some mere meters below the seabed. Employing hundreds of men and reaching an impressive depth of 400 meters, these mines produced thousands of tons of valuable tin and copper. The artwork featured here is from La Science Illustree, a renowned French popular science weekly publication. This particular piece comes from its 13th volume published in 1894. The monochromatic illustration beautifully captures the rugged coastal landscape where these mining endeavors took place. As smoke billows from chimneys atop cliffside structures, one can almost feel the intensity and scale of this thriving industry. However, by the early 20th century, most of these once-booming mines had shuttered their doors. Through this historical image, we are transported back to a time when technological advancements fueled Cornwall's economy and shaped its identity as a prominent mining region. It serves as a poignant reminder that even though these mines may have closed long ago, their legacy lives on through artful depictions like this one captured by Louis Figuier for La Science Illustree's annual volume over a century ago.
