Apoptosis, fluorescent light micrograph

Apoptosis. 2-photon fluorescence light micrograph of a cultured cell (centre) undergoing apoptosis, or programmed cell death. It is surrounded by healthy cells. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is blue, tubulin protein, which makes up microtubules, is red and Golgi bodies are green. Apoptosis occurs when a cell becomes old or damaged. The cell becomes spherical as its cytoskeleton, which holds cell shape, is digested, and blebs, or vesicles, form on its surface. Eventually the cell breaks into several vesicles, now known as apoptotic bodies, and is phagocytosed (engulfed and digested) by specialist cells

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate process of apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in a cultured cell. At the center of the image, we witness a single cell undergoing this natural phenomenon while being surrounded by healthy cells. The vibrant colors highlight different cellular components: blue represents DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), red signifies tubulin protein that forms microtubules, and green depicts Golgi bodies. Apoptosis occurs when a cell becomes old or damaged, triggering a series of events within its structure. As the process unfolds, the cytoskeleton responsible for maintaining cell shape is digested, causing the cell to adopt a spherical form. Small vesicles called blebs emerge on its surface as it progresses further towards disintegration. Eventually, these vesicles multiply and separate from each other to become apoptotic bodies. The fate of these apoptotic bodies lies in their phagocytosis – they are engulfed and digested by specialized cells known as phagocytes. This remarkable mechanism ensures that dying cells are efficiently removed from tissues without causing harm or inflammation. Through this mesmerizing micrograph captured using fluorescent light microscopy techniques, we gain insight into one of nature's most fascinating processes at an intimate cellular level. It serves as a reminder of both life's fragility and its ability to maintain balance through controlled self-destruction when necessary.
