EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a unique piece of advertising history from 1923. The image showcases a Players counter card designed in the shape of a banner with scrolled ends, featuring the iconic sailor in a life-buoy trade mark at either end. Boldly printed on the banner is the text "PLAYER S", representing the renowned tobacco brand. On the reverse side of this intriguing artifact, we find a rubber stamp that reads "JOHN PLAYER & SONS // STORES ADVERTISING // GARDEN ST. ", providing insight into its origin and purpose. A paper label has been attached to it, revealing fascinating details about subsequent reprints and modifications made to these scrolls. The label mentions that only the inner scroll bearing the word "Players" and the loop beneath were included in a later reprint obtained from an unspecified department known as S. W. D. Additionally, it highlights that this particular version was dated November 9th, 1925 (I. T. C No. 11/9/25), emphasizing these lines by underlining them in red ink. This print not only serves as an extraordinary glimpse into early advertising techniques but also reflects Nottingham's rich industrial heritage through its association with John Player & Sons—a company deeply rooted in tobacco manufacturing.
