EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, two iconic aircraft from the Cold War era are displayed at Wright Field, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, with Fairchild C-119F-FA Flying Boxcar O-18037 taking center stage. Delivered to the United States Air Force (USAF) on June 2, 1953, as a C-119F with the manufacturing serial number 10915 and military serial number 51-8037, this Fairchild C-119F underwent significant modifications in 1958. Assigned to the 456th Troop Carrier Wing, it was returned to Fairchild for conversion into a recovery aircraft for Discoverer reconnaissance satellite film return capsules. The world's first mid-air recovery of a capsule return from a satellite was achieved by this very aircraft on August 19, 1960. At an altitude of 8,000 feet and 360 miles southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii, the capsule from Discoverer XIV was successfully recovered, marking a major milestone in the history of space exploration. After further service in the USAF Reserve, O-18037 was flown to the Air Force Museum at Wright Field, Wright-Patterson AFB, in November 1963. In this image, O-18037 is proudly displayed alongside a Boeing KB-50J, 49-0389. The C-119F's distinctive boxy shape and the KB-50J's sleek design create a compelling contrast, showcasing the diversity of aircraft in the USAF inventory during this era. This photograph is an intriguing snapshot of aviation history, offering a glimpse into the past and the remarkable achievements of the United States Air Force.
