The painting, housed in the Manchester Art Gallery, depicts the goddess Venus with striking beauty and sensuality. Rossetti's model for Astarte Syriaca was Jane Morris, with whom he had a passionate relationship. Jane became one of Rossetti's muses and inspired many of his works. This particular piece captures her ethereal allure and embodies the romantic ideals that were central to Rossetti's artistic vision. Dante Gabriel Rossetti was not only an accomplished painter but also a renowned poet, illustrator, and translator. He co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 alongside William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. His admiration for Italian writer Dante Alighieri is evident in both his name choice and artistic style.
