EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving depicts a female Southern elephant seal, Mirounga leonina, also known as an elephant seal cow. The intricately detailed illustration was created by James Stewart and engraved by W.H. Lizars for Robert Hamilton's "Amphibious Carnivora," part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Mammalia, published in Edinburgh in 1839. The Southern elephant seal is the largest species of seal and the second largest pinniped, after the walrus. Female elephant seals can reach lengths of up to 5.5 meters and weigh up to 3,000 kg. They are characterized by their long, curved, and elongated snouts, which can measure up to 1.5 meters in length. Their body is covered in smooth, grey skin, and they have large, flipper-like limbs that are used for swimming. Female elephant seals spend most of their lives at sea, only coming ashore to breed and molt. During the breeding season, they form large colonies on remote beaches, where they give birth to their pups and nurse them for several months. After weaning, the females return to the sea to feed on krill and other deep-sea organisms. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the impressive size and features of the female Southern elephant seal but also highlights the remarkable detail and artistry of 19th-century natural history illustrations. It is a testament to the dedication of naturalists like Sir William Jardine and the skill of artists and engravers like James Stewart and W.H. Lizars in documenting the natural world for future generations.
