EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken on 1st December 1919, HRH Prince of Wales (future King Edward VIII) (1894-1972) is seen making his homecoming appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after completing a successful tour of Canada and the United States. The future King, dressed in military uniform, is flanked by members of his royal family, including his mother, Queen Alexandra of Denmark (1844-1925), his grandmother, Queen Mary (1867-1953), and his aunt, Mary, Princess Royal (1897-1965). King George V (1865-1936), the reigning monarch, stands proudly beside his son, as the royal family warmly welcomes the Prince back from his lengthy tour. The crowd below enthusiastically salutes the returning Prince, who had won the hearts of the people of Canada and the United States with his charm and charisma. The Prince's successful tour had boosted morale in the aftermath of the First World War and had strengthened the British monarchy's relationship with its North American dominions. This iconic image captures a moment of joy and unity within the royal family and symbolizes the renewed hope and optimism of the post-war era.
