1915: Goatskin Shortages - A Humorous Suggestion from Edwin Morrow As the harsh winter of 1915 approached, the British military faced a pressing issue: a potential shortage of goatskins for the production of soldiers' overcoats. In response to this predicament, renowned satirist Edwin Morrow proposed some humorous alternatives to keep the troops warm during World War I. Morrow, known for his wit and humor, penned a letter to the War Office suggesting unconventional substitutes for goatskins. His tongue-in-cheek suggestions included: 1. Hirsuitabilities: "Why not consider the abundant supply of hirsute soldiers? A well-groomed beard or moustache could be sheared off and used to create a warm, natural insulation for winter coats. After all, every soldier has one, and it's a renewable resource!" 2. Fur Profiteers: "Perhaps we could turn to the fur profiteers. They've been hoarding furs for their own gain. Why not seize their ill-gotten gains and put them to good use? A tiger or rabbit pelt could provide ample warmth for our brave soldiers." 3. Taxidermy: "Or, we could repurpose the countless stuffed animals in museums and private collections. Those tigers, wolves, monkeys, and even goats could be taken down from their pedestals and put to use in the trenches. After all, they've been looking a bit chilly in their glass cases!" Morrow's humorous suggestions, though far-fetched, brought a momentary reprieve from the grim realities of war. They served as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, a touch of humor could lighten the mood and bring a sense of unity among the troops. As history shows, Morrow's ideas were not implemented, and the military eventually found other solutions to the goatskin shortage. But his letter remains a testament to the power of humor and the resilience of the human spirit, even in the face of adversity.
