This illustration was drawn by Captain Bryan de Grineau, the Illustrated London New's artist, from a description given to him by an eye-witness, Mr. Tom Treanor of the 'Los Angeles Times'. Date: 1944

Sigra the Sumatran tiger
Sigra the Sumatran tiger, at Dublin Zoo, Ireland. 16/03/2004: Habitat loss and illegal trade in animal parts threatens the Sumatran tiger - the last of Indonesia's tiger species, according to a report out Tuesday March 16, 2004. It reveals that at least 50 Sumatran tigers have been poached per year between 1998 and 2002. A report issued by the wildlife trade monitoring network, Traffic and the conservation charity World Wildlife Fund, entitled: Trade of the Sumatran Tiger, that the species may become extinct in a few years unless poaching and destruction of its habititat are stopped immediately. The report states that less than 500 of the species remain in the wild and more than 50 were killed annually in 1998-2002.

The Death of Ellen Bright at Wombwell's Menagerie, 1850
Engraving showing Ellen Bright (1832-1850), a 'Lion Queen' animal trainer, being attacked by a tiger during the course of a performance at Wombwell's Menagerie, Chatham, January 1850. Ellen Bright sustained fatal wounds from the tiger's attack and died shortly thereafter.
