EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the resilience of a young mother in 1930s America. Dorothea Lange, renowned photographer for the Farm Security Administration (FSA), beautifully portrays the struggles faced by this twenty-two-year-old woman living in Klamath County, Oregon. With her three-year-old daughter by her side, we see a glimpse into their humble abode within an FSA mobile unit camp. The cramped conditions reflect the hardships endured during the Great Depression. This young mother's story is one of constant movement and hard work as she and her husband traveled across various towns to find employment in different crops such as strawberries, cherries, beans, and hops. The caption reveals that they have lost their car due to helping others in need while struggling to make ends meet themselves. Their current situation is dire; they haven't a cent left after spending everything on food and travel expenses. In this image, we witness not only the physical toll of displacement but also its emotional impact. Despite these challenges, there is strength emanating from this young mother's gaze – determination to provide for her family even with another baby on the way. Dorothea Lange's photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both the hardships faced by agricultural workers during that era and their unwavering spirit amidst adversity. It stands as a testament to human resilience and sheds light on an important chapter in American history.
