"Displaced and Determined: Stories of Survival and Resilience" During the turmoil of the First World War in 1914, Belgians fled from Termonde, seeking refuge from the horrors that surrounded them. Their journey was marked by uncertainty and fear, as they left behind their homes and loved ones in search of safety. Fast forward to 1920, where one can find a glimpse into another chapter of displacement. In Malin, Klamath County, Oregon, families found themselves living in one of the forty potato camps scattered across open fields. These makeshift settlements became their temporary homes as they awaited the opening season for work opportunities. Dorothea Lange's poignant photographs capture these moments frozen in time. Families camped on flat grounds near Merrill, Klamath County; their faces etched with both hope and weariness. They yearned for stability while enduring harsh conditions before the potato harvest began. As life moved forward to 1939, Lange's lens continued to document stories of migratory families who had come to Klamath Basin for employment during the potato harvest season. The images reveal their struggles but also highlight their determination to provide for themselves amidst challenging circumstances. The photographs depict scenes from one of the forty potato camps entering town - a symbolic representation of these displaced individuals' constant movement in search of livelihoods. The manager's presence at a mobile unit opening day camp showcases efforts made by organizations like FSA (Farm Security Administration) to support these communities during difficult times. Lange's lens also captures pickers' tents alongside power units and shower baths within an FSA camp - glimpses into communal spaces created amidst adversity, and is here that this family finally arrived after long journeys - finding solace within this newfound community spirit. Amongst those captured by Lange is a young mother aged twenty-two who stands as an embodiment of strength despite her tender age.
