EDITORS COMMENTS
Dominique Parrenin (1665-1741): A French Jesuit Missionary to China and Co-Author of the General Map of China This portrait depicts Dominique Parrenin, a renowned French Jesuit missionary who dedicated his life to spreading the Catholic faith in China during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Parrenin was born in France and joined the Society of Jesus in 1682. He arrived in China in 1693 and spent the next several decades living and working among the Chinese people. Parrenin is best known for his contributions to the cartography of China. He was one of the authors of the influential "General Map of China," which was first published in its original French form in 1847 and later translated into Spanish and published in Barcelona in 1863. This map was a significant achievement, as it provided an accurate and detailed representation of China's geography at a time when European knowledge of the country was limited. The etching of Parrenin was created by Mathieu-Richard-Auguste Henrion, Baron de (1805-1862), a Spanish artist based in Barcelona. Henrion's portrait captures the intensity and dedication of Parrenin, who spent his life bridging the cultural divide between Europe and China. Parrenin's work was part of a larger historical project to document the history of Christian missions from the 13th century to the present day. The Spanish translation of his map was published as part of this larger work, which aimed to preserve and disseminate knowledge about the global spread of Christianity. This portrait is a testament to the enduring legacy of Dominique Parrenin and his contributions to the study of China and the history of Christian missions. With his unwavering commitment to his faith and his scholarly pursuits, Parrenin remains an inspiring figure in the annals of religious and cartographic history.
