EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite etching, created in the 18th century, depicts the Annona glabra, also known as the pond apple or water sapote. This tropical flora is a member of the Annonaceae family, which is part of the larger group of Angiosperms, Flowering Plants, and Dicotyledons. Native to the Caribbean, Central America, and southern Florida, the Annona glabra is a tree or large shrub that bears edible fruit. The illustration captures the intricate details of the Annona glabra's large, glossy leaves, which are arranged alternately along the stem. The tree's flowers, which are not shown in this image, are funnel-shaped and produce both male and female flowers on the same plant. The fruit, which is not ripe in this depiction, is round and green, and turns yellow or orange when it's ready to eat. The Annona glabra is home to a diverse range of fauna, including various species of lizards. The illustration includes a lacertilia, a type of lizard, climbing on the tree. The lizard is a diapsid, a subclass of reptiles that includes all living lizards, snakes, and their extinct relatives. This etching was likely produced during the 1700s, a time when natural history illustrations were in high demand for scientific exploration and documentation. The work is attributed to Mark Catesby, a renowned English naturalist, artist, and explorer who is considered one of the founding figures of American zoology. His detailed and accurate illustrations of North American plants and animals were published in "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands," a groundbreaking work that helped establish the scientific study of the New World's natural history.
