The Great Eastern, 1886

The Great Eastern, 1886. Isambard Kingdom Brunel proposed to the Eastern Steam Navigation Company the construction of a steamship five or six times the size of any then in use. It would use two forms of power: paddle-wheels and screw-engines. Constructed from iron at Millwall, London, between 1853 and 1858, the Great Eastern was the largest vessel afloat until she was broken up in 1888. Only in 1899 were her dimensions exceeded by the SS Oceanic. The Great Eastern was not a success as a passenger vessel and was sold for a fraction of her building cost. She was used as a cable-laying ship, most notably laying the Transatlantic telegraph cable in 1865-1866. Illustration from Cyclopaedia of Useful Arts, Mechanical and Chemical, Manufactures, Mining, and Engineering, by Charles Tomlinson, Volume I, (Jamess Virtue, London, 1886)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Great Eastern, a groundbreaking steamship that revolutionized the shipping industry in the 19th century. Designed by the visionary engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, this colossal vessel was proposed to the Eastern Steam Navigation Company as a technological marvel unlike any other. Constructed between 1853 and 1858 at Millwall, London, using iron as its primary material, the Great Eastern surpassed all previous ships in size until her eventual dismantling in 1888. With both paddle-wheels and screw-engines powering her immense structure, she represented an unparalleled feat of engineering innovation. Although not successful as a passenger ship and sold for a fraction of her building cost, the Great Eastern found new purpose as a cable-laying ship. Notably, she played a pivotal role in laying down the Transatlantic telegraph cable during 1865-1866. This detailed illustration from Charles Tomlinson's Cyclopaedia of Useful Arts captures every intricate detail of this monumental vessel. Its monochrome aesthetic adds to its timeless allure while emphasizing its historical significance. As we gaze upon this remarkable image, we are transported back to an era where technology met ambition on an unprecedented scale. The Great Eastern stands tall as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in pushing boundaries within water transport and shaping our modern world.
