EDITORS COMMENTS
This 15th century print, titled 'The Crucifixion,' showcases the profound depth and intricacy of European art during the late Middle Ages. The anonymous artist masterfully depicts the New Testament scene of Christ's crucifixion, surrounded by a multitude of biblical characters and animals. The image is believed to have originated from Germany, with hand-tinted details adding vibrancy to the black and white metalcut print on ivory laid paper. Christ, the central figure, is shown in agony as he hangs on the cross, his hands and feet pierced by nails. Mary, the Virgin Mother, and John the Apostle stand mournfully at the foot of the cross, their faces etched with sorrow. A crowd of onlookers, including Roman soldiers and other bystanders, observe the scene with a mix of awe, fear, and indifference. Two horses and their riders are present at the scene, one of which appears to be a knight, possibly symbolizing the presence of the Roman authorities. A pair of dogs, perhaps representing faithfulness or guardianship, are also depicted at the base of the cross. The intricate details and meticulous border decoration further emphasize the significance and importance of this piece in the annals of Christian art history. This exquisite work of art, with its rich heritage and historical value, is now a cherished addition to the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world.
