Christ, the central figure, is shown in agony as he hangs on the cross, his hands and feet pierced by nails. Mary, the Virgin Mother, and John the Apostle stand mournfully at the foot of the cross, their faces etched with sorrow. Two horses and their riders are present at the scene, one of which appears to be a knight, possibly symbolizing the presence of the Roman authorities.
