This 15th century print, titled 'The Crucifixion,' showcases the profound depth and intricacy of European art during the late Middle Ages. The anonymous artist masterfully depicts the New Testament scene of Christ's crucifixion, surrounded by a multitude of biblical characters and animals. The image is believed to have originated from Germany, with hand-tinted details adding vibrancy to the black and white metalcut print on ivory laid paper. Christ, the central figure, is shown in agony as he hangs on the cross, his hands and feet pierced by nails. Mary, the Virgin Mother, and John the Apostle stand mournfully at the foot of the cross, their faces etched with sorrow. A crowd of onlookers, including Roman soldiers and other bystanders, observe the scene with a mix of awe, fear, and indifference.
