Penguins Jumping On to The Ice-Foot, c1911, (1913). Artist: G Murray Levick
Penguins Jumping On to The Ice-Foot, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Penguins Jumping On to The Ice-Foot" captures a moment of pure joy and innocence amidst the harsh Antarctic landscape. Taken during the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott in 1911, it showcases the remarkable resilience and adaptability of these adorable creatures. As part of the Terra Nova Expedition, a diverse team of scientists embarked on this ambitious journey to unravel the mysteries of Antarctica. Led by Scott, they aimed not only to conduct scientific research but also to be the first humans to conquer the South Pole. In this particular image, we witness penguins leaping onto an ice-foot with boundless energy and enthusiasm. Their synchronized movements create a mesmerizing spectacle against the backdrop of icy terrain. It serves as a poignant reminder that life continues even in extreme conditions. Sadly, despite their valiant efforts, Scott's team arrived at their destination only to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by mere weeks. Trapped by brutal blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his companions tragically perished in March 1912. The discovery of their bodies eight months later brought closure but also immortalized their heroic spirit and unwavering determination. This photograph stands as a testament not only to nature's beauty but also to humanity's unyielding pursuit for knowledge and exploration.
