EDITORS COMMENTS
Thence issuing we again beheld the stars, c1890. Creator: Gustave Doré In this print by Gustave Doré, we are transported to a moment of profound wonder and awe. The image depicts Dante Alighieri and the Roman poet Virgil emerging from the depths of Hell, their eyes lifted upwards towards a celestial spectacle. As they step out of the darkness into the light, a circular opening in the cave reveals a breathtaking sight - an expanse of twinkling stars illuminating the night sky. The beauty and brilliance of these heavenly lights serve as a stark contrast to their harrowing journey through Hell. This illustration is taken from "The Vision of Hell" (Inferno), which is part one of Dante's epic poem "The Divine Comedy". Written between 1308-1321 in Italian, it chronicles Dante's imaginary voyage through Hell, Purgatory, and finally to Heaven where he experiences a beatific vision of God. Gustave Doré's intricate engraving skillfully captures both the ethereal quality of the stars above and the emotions evoked by this transformative moment for Dante and Virgil. Published in late 19th century editions alongside Dore's illustrations, his work brings new life to Dante's timeless masterpiece. This print serves as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with astronomy, literature, and artistry that transcends time itself.
