Emperor Penguins, 1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. This print captures a moment from the historic Terra Nova Expedition, led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken in 1911 by artist Frank Debenham, it showcases a group of majestic Emperor Penguins against the backdrop of an icy landscape. The Terra Nova Expedition was not only an ambitious quest to reach the South Pole but also aimed to conduct scientific research in Antarctica. The team consisted of experts from various fields including geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology and physics. On January 17th, 1912, after enduring treacherous conditions and facing numerous challenges along their journey, Scott and his companions Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans finally reached the geographic South Pole. However, their joy turned into disappointment as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them to this coveted destination just a month earlier. Tragically delayed by blizzards and running out of supplies on their return journey from the pole; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. It would be eight months before their bodies were found along with their poignant diaries. This remarkable photograph is part of the Frank Debenham collection featured in "Scott's Last Expedition".
