The Emperor Penguin is the largest of all penguin species and is found exclusively in Antarctica, and are well adapted to survive in the extreme cold temperatures of their habitat, with a thick layer of feathers that insulates them from the cold and a layer of blubber beneath their skin for added warmth and are excellent swimmers, able to dive up to depths of 550 meters and swim at speeds up to 6 km/h. They feed mainly on krill, squid, fish, and other small marine animals. The breeding season for Emperor Penguins begins in March or April when they gather together on large colonies on sea ice near the shoreline. Males arrive first and wait patiently for females who will lay one single egg each before returning back out to sea. The males then take turns incubating the eggs by balancing them on their feet while huddling together in large groups for warmth until they hatch around late June or early July. After hatching, chicks are fed regurgitated food by both parents until they reach independence at around 10 weeks old when they join other young birds out at sea where they will remain until adulthood.
