The Barne Glacier: A Crevasse With A Thin Snow Bridge, c1910–1913, (1913)

The Barne Glacier: A Crevasse With A Thin Snow Bridge, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "The Barne Glacier: A Crevasse With A Thin Snow Bridge" takes us back to the early 20th century and immerses us in the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. As a renowned British Antarctic explorer, Scott led the Terra Nova Expedition from 1910 to 1913 with a diverse team of experts. In this particular image, we witness the treacherous beauty of Antarctica's icy landscape. The deep crevasse is adorned with a delicate snow bridge that seems almost fragile against the vastness surrounding it. It serves as a metaphor for both the challenges and risks faced by Scott and his team during their ambitious journey. Scott's ultimate goal was to reach the South Pole while continuing important scientific research. However, upon their arrival on January 17,1912, they were met with disappointment as they discovered that Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition had beaten them there by a month. Tragically, due to blizzards and dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining crew members perished at the end of March that same year. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. This poignant photograph captures not only an awe-inspiring natural wonder but also commemorates the bravery and determination exhibited by these explorers in their pursuit of knowledge and adventure amidst some of Earth's harshest conditions.
