A glacier is a large mass of ice that moves slowly over land, usually originating from snowfall in an area. Glaciers form when more snow accumulates than melts over several years. As the snow compresses, it becomes denser and forms into glacial ice. Glaciers move due to gravity and their own mass, often carving out valleys and other features in the landscape as they go, and are important sources of freshwater for people living near them, as well as providing habitat for many species of wildlife. In addition to being a source of water, glaciers also play an important role in regulating global climate by reflecting solar radiation back into space and storing carbon dioxide in their ice sheets.
